HIV/AIDS PREVENTION THE FACE OF THE WOMAN

This is 2010 and the global pandemic of HIV/AIDS has also globally negatively impacted the woman (woman and girl). In Cameroon the demographic survey of 2004 revealed the national prevalence as 5.5%. Men have 4.1% and women 6.8%. The North West Region where I am has the highest prevalence rate per region in Cameroon of 8.7%. Men have 5.2% and women 11.9%. Looking at how women are infected, out of the ten regions in Cameroon, eight regions have a higher prevalence rate of women comparatively to men while one is at parity with men and one below men. Undocumented data reveals HIV infected men die earlier than HIV infected women leaving behind a trail of widows and orphans to be catered for by women.

Prisca was married and discovered she was HIV positive when she was pregnant for her second child. She convinced the husband to know his serological status which was HIV positive too. She joined the PLWHA support group and was empowered on how to live positively. Her husband refused to join any PLWHA support group as he was in denial. Prisca’s husband had a twin brother who had been sick on and off. She pleaded with her husband to ensure the brother does his HIV test.
