HEDECS ON COVID 19 PREVENTION: PROXIMITY EDUCATION AND SENSITIZATION IN BAMENDA AND BAFUT

On Monday 6th of July 2020, HEDECS carried out a proximity education and sensitization campaign around the neighborhood in Bamenda 2, Ngomgham. This exercise took place in 5 households, covering a total of 38 people. It was done in a bit to prevent the spread of COVID 19. HEDECS taught on the importance of proper hand washing, wearing of face masks and also enlighten the neighborhood about the existence of COVID 19. HEDECS realized that majority of the target population don’t believe in the existence of Corona virus, due to the fact that none of them as testified had recorded a victim or seen a victim they know.

However, they were made to understand that, the fact that they haven’t officially recorded a victim was not a criterion for not believing in the existence of COVID 19. They also had the privilege to learn about proper hand washing, scrubbing their hands for at least 20 seconds with soap before washing with clean running water. They also understood the importance of wearing the facial mask when in public places. At the end of the activity, they all left with a change of mind set and were all empowered and ready to prevent being infected and infecting others from the corona virus.

HEDECS also empowered in the month of May 2020 in two sessions, 8 community health workers –CHWs in Bafut Health District on mainstreaming COVID 19 in their regular activities. They are encouraged to continue giving out proper education and preventive measures to the communities they serve in Bafut. They are now carrying out preventive education and sensitization in their various communities.
